If you arrive for your surf lesson early (as we did), continue north on HI-93 and explore the area. You’ll find beautiful views and great photo ops along the way.

I recommend the 9 a.m. surf lesson above the others. Less sun and no time constraints for the rest of the day.

About This Day

Looking for the best things to do in Oahu for families? Look no further! A day spent in West Oahu surfing offers a perfect adventure for the whole family. Start early, before the sun climbs too high for comfort. Sign the kids up for surf lessons and watch as they catch each wave with a private instructor. Afterwards, head over to one of the beautiful Ko Olina lagoons with a picnic lunch. Better still, call ahead and have lunch delivered to you right on the beach. The leeward side of the island is perfect for those families that want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Waikiki and Honolulu.

Surfing is one of the most popular things to do with kids in Oahu. West Oahu SUP has a 12-and-under program where each child receives a private instructor who will tandem surf with them. This allows them to get out there and surf every single wave! The instructors are very kid-friendly; in fact, my 5-year-old has an instructor would pick him up and do tricks with him. (Needless to say, it was his favorite part of the trip.). Bonus, the company’s West Oahu location is outside of the tourist zones of Waikiki and Honolulu.
DIRECTIONS Head northwest on HI-93 W, the location will be on the right.
TIP Book the first surf time slot at 9 a.m. because then you will have the rest of the day to continue without any time constraints. Pack snacks and sand toys for those not surfing. There are a couple of picnic tables nearby.

Ko Olina Lagoons are stunning. The water is shallow and calm, and there is a grassy area with plenty of shade. An excellent spot for families with young children to “set up shop.”
DIRECTIONS Head southeast on HI-93 E, take the exit towards Ko Olina, continue on Ali'inui Dr and turn right Waialii Pl to look for parking. You can also turn right on Mauloa Pl (lagoon 3) or Waipahe Pl (lagoons 3 and 4).
TIP Parking at the Ko Olina Lagoons can difficult, depending on the time of day. Be flexible and park wherever there is availability, then walk to your destination. If you do not want to pack a picnic, there are a couple of places that will deliver pizza to you right on the beach.
