Good to know
If you want to treat your family to something special, travel to Yangshuo by boat. We took a 5.5-hour boat ride from Guilin (the nearest airport) to Yangshuo. There was also an option to take a 90-minute bus. Ask your hotel for help in booking the river cruise.

Visiting Guangxi with kids? This excursion to the Guangxi town of Yangshuo is a perfect way to experience China in a family-friendly setting. From Guilin, book your family on the Li River cruise, which will take 5.5 hours of relaxation and beautiful views. Arriving in Yangshuo, take the short drive into the countryside and check into the Yangshuo Ecofarm Lodge. There are other Yangshuo hotels, but the lodge, which is set near many hiking trails, rents bicycles for exploring, as well as providing transportation to a local Chinese cooking school.

Yangshuo Cooking School is a hands-on experience, located in a serene part of Yangshuo where residents grow many of their own vegetables and fruits. The lesson begins with a visit to the local market. There’s availability for up to 6 participants, who are given workspace and necessary tools (including a wok) to make five dishes each. Afterward, students sit outside at a beautifully decorated table and enjoy their dishes. Even for people like us who have lived in China for more than a year, it was a fascinating experience to learn first-hand how to prepare some of our favorite traditional Chinese dishes. We brought along 3 small children with us for the lesson. They were happy to play outside among the fruit and vegetable fields. The instructor was patient with us when we needed to attend to our kids.
DIRECTIONS
We booked the Yangshuo Cooking School through Yangshuo Ecofarm Lodge, which provided car service to and from the Cooking School.

Explore the area in and around the Yangshuo Ecofarm Lodge. If you want to venture further, the city center is about 5 km (3 mi) from the lodge. With young children, bikes are actually a great way for sightseeing in and around the hotel property. We got one bike with a baby seat, while the other had a small seat in between my legs, where my 3-year-old could sit.
DIRECTIONS
The rental bikes are located right at the Lodge for easy pickup and drop off.
