Weekends on Sydney Harbour can be very crowded. If possible organize your visit for a weekday.

Ferry rides on the harbor can be taken anytime of year. Summer and spring are a good time do this if you want to swim.

About This Day

In the summer, a day at one of Sydney’s lovely harborside beaches is one of the best things to do in Sydney with kids. Take the Ferry and sit on the outside decks to catch the views. Children will love the ferry ride, sitting with the wind in their hair and watching the other boats pass by. Cool off with a swim at Watsons Bay Beach, then head to Watsons Bay Hotel for a meal. Or buy just the ingredients for an impromptu picnic! This itinerary allows you to experience Sydney like a local.

A ferry ride from Circular Quay to Watsons Bay is a great way to explore Sydney Harbour and take in those beautiful Sydney views. Outside decks provide the best spot for taking photos of the Harbour Bridge, Opera House and boats in the Harbour. The ferry cruises past Garden Island, Darling Point, Double Bay and Rose Bay before arriving at Watsons Bay. You can see some of the beautiful harborside homes as you go past and little, hidden beaches and, at the stop in Rose Bay, you may see some Sea Planes getting ready to take off. Once at Watsons Bay, head to one of the little beaches to the left or right of the jetty and find a spot on the beach. The kids will have fun splashing and swimming in the water and building sand castles.
DIRECTIONS Circular Quay is on Sydney Harbour, a 5- to 10-minute walk from the city center. If you can catch the train, get off at Circular Quay train station. Head to the Ferry terminal’s ticket booths.
TIP Pack a bag with swimmers, towels, hats, sunscreen and sand toys for the kids.

The Watsons Bay Hotel is a lovely spot to eat lunch or have a drink overlooking Watsons Bay. You can eat in at the restaurant but we just bought some ice cream and drinks for the kids and coffee for the parents. A short walk back to the park, we found a shady spot to have our snacks before we headed back on the ferry to Circular Quay.
DIRECTIONS From the beach, walk back to the jetty and turn right.
