Playa Pelícano is one of the most pristine beaches in Puerto Rico. Although there are some cabañas available, if you want to be close to the water, bring an umbrella or hat to cover from the sun.

About This Day

Looking for day trips in Puerto Rico? Then Playa Pelícano on Isla Caja de Muertos is the place to visit. This itinerary offers great family activities and quite possibly the best beaches in Puerto Rico. Also, it is a place to disconnect and recharge. Start with a fun ferry ride to the island. Then, arrive on the island and jump straight into the water. Next, take a hike to the abandoned lighthouse. Afterwards, you will be ready to hit the water again. After a lovely day, head back to your hotel drained but with smiles in your faces. One never tires of Caja de Muertos Island and its beaches. I guarantee this place will be in your memories forever. In fact, on your next family vacation to Puerto Rico, you might feel the island's beauty and serenity draw you back again!

Playa Pelícano is a natural reserve. You are not going to find resorts or high-end amenities here. Just the best beaches in Puerto Rico, secluded and perfect for postcard pictures. Walk the island, take the trails and climb to the lighthouse to get a full view of the Isla Caja de Muertos (Coffin Island).
DIRECTIONS If you are staying in San Juan, you will need to drive across the island to the southern town of Ponce. Island Venture departs from La Guancha.
TIP Prepare yourself to be surrounded by nature and nothing else. Disconnect from the world and enjoy the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean Sea.

The Playa Pelícano Old Lighthouse has been abandoned for a while, but the structure is open and you can explore it. Kids will love to get lost in it. From the lighthouse you will have a view of the rest of Caja de Muertos Island, perfect for taking pictures.
DIRECTIONS Trails from the beach will lead you to the lighthouse. The first part of the trail is easy to hike, but the second part is more difficult.
TIP The hike to the lighthouse can be difficult with small children. I highly recommend going with older kids, willing to climb to the top of a mountain, using limestone rocks as stairs.
