nugget’s Advice
Prepare in advance
Contact pro surfer "Pony" of Jah Surf School in advance to book your lessons.
Good to know
There are other surf companies for surfing at Playa Brujas; however, Pony is super friendly, great with kids and speaks English well. Check the swell and water conditions before planning your day to prevent a cancellation “let-down” for the kids.
Recommended day/time
If you want a more adventurous surf trip, this activity can be made into a full day, but when coordinated with the tide and Jah Surf School in advance, a half-day is plenty of time to enjoy this family adventure. We recommend doing this family trip in the mornings, to give you time to get coffee at the Looney Bean before your surfing lessons.
Recommended time of the year
November to May is the best time to plan this mini-adventure in Mexico with kids. Most places close shop during the off-season (mid-May to late October). Check the schedules online before you plan your Mazatlán surfing trip.
Save Money
Normally, we would recommend packing a lunch, but you don't want to miss the lunch that Looney Bean has to offer. Another option is to pack a lunch for the beach and do breakfast at Looney Bean.
About This Day
This active beach day is all about Mazatlán surfing for the family, with friendly, local surf instructors and a friendly, local coffee shop. It's two of our family's favorite things in life: Waking up to get coffee, and then going surfing with the kids in Mexico’s warm water. So do as we do for a fun adventure during your Mexico vacation with kids. Grab a coffee and hit Playa Brujas, one of the best beaches in Mazatlán, Mexico. Local instructors will keep kids safe while teaching them to surf. Afterward, head back to the local coffee shop for fresh local food or bring a packed lunch to the beach for a picnic. This outing is the perfect recipe for the best day ever!
The coffee at Looney Bean in Cerritos is fresh and delicious, and the food is also fresh and locally sourced. Plus, with every whole-bean coffee purchase, 10% of sales will go to local low-income families in need.
DIRECTIONS Take any public transportation bus that is going to Cerritos or use Uber anywhere in Mazatlán. If you rent a car, use Google Maps to take you north from Mazatlán to Cerritos traffic circle/plaza area.
TIP Take your coffee to the beach and watch the kids surf. Afterward, go back to Looney Bean for lunch or ask Looney Bean to pack you a lunch for the beach.
Jah Surf School is really good at teaching kids how to surf, and the instructors pay lots of attention to kids safety in the water. There is one instructor per 3 students and 6 instructors per 20 students. Surf lessons include a surfboard, leash, wax and 2 hours of instruction with a 10 minute speech and 10 minutes of training on the sand. The rest of the instruction time is in the water. Pack a picnic lunch for the beach or go back to Looney Bean for fresh local food afterward.
DIRECTIONS Contact Jah Surf School for a meeting location. State that you would like to go to Playa Brujas. They will most likely be out there or will meet you there.
TIP The cost average (season depending) board rental is $10 per hour, $25 daily and $80 weekly. Surf lessons are $50 for private lessons, with $80 for 2 people and $90 for 3 people. (The bigger the group, the cheaper the prices.) Jah also does surf trips for people with more experience surfing: $60 per 5-hour trip that includes surfboard and transportation, toll road and surf guide.
