About This Day
Visiting Kauai with kids? The Kauai Plantation Railway is a must for any family with little train lovers. Start your day with a deliciously refreshing acai bowl from Anakē's Juice Bar. Then take your children on a family-friendly train ride at the Kauai Plantation. Learn about the tropical fruits grown on the farm and stop to feed the plantation’s goats, pigs and chickens. My nugget enjoyed this ride so much that when we got off the train, he wanted to get right back on it! It’s also a great activity if you want to escape the heat and just sit back and relax.
Start your day with a refreshing acai bowl. We tried a lot of acai bowls on Kauai and this was by far our favorite. The location itself is a bit strange since it’s inside a grocery store and the few tables they have are between the aisles of the grocery store. But the food is absolutely worth it. The toppings are fresh and plentiful, and they have a number of interesting creations. Their smoothies are also very good. They also sell overnight oats in a small refrigerator next to the juice bar. The oats are absolutely delicious. We took a few jars of oats home for breakfast the next day.
DIRECTIONS Anakē's Juice Bar is hidden inside a somewhat tired-looking grocery store in a small strip mall off Poipu Road; it is right next to Kauai Outfitters.
TIP There’s a tiny play area with a few toys and books in the grocery store. It’s nothing special, but it kept my child happily entertained while I waited for our food.
If you are visiting Kauai with a child who loves trains, this is the place to take your nugget. I will admit, I was at first skeptical when I read about the Kauai Plantation; it sounded like a tourist trap. But trust me, while this is a touristy activity, it is actually a lot of fun, and you’ll learn about all the different fruits grown and harvested on the property. The highlight of the train ride is a stop to feed the chickens, goats and pigs that make a home on the plantation. My little one was a bit intimidated by the goats, but he loved tossing the bread at the pigs.
DIRECTIONS Kauai Plantation is a 20-minute drive from Anakē's Juice Bar. Make sure to take the scenic road and drive through the Tree Tunnel on Maluhia Road outside of Koloa Town.
TIP In case you are looking for a lunch option, there is a restaurant on the premise, but we didn’t try it. They also offer walking tours of the property, which we might have tried if our child was a bit older.
