About This Day

What’s the perfect vacation day in Norway for kids? How about a morning fjords cruise and island exploration combined with an afternoon of play and mountain hike?  Thanks to Bergen’s transportation options, you can soak in those Nordic views without having to trek everywhere with your kids. Start your Norway fjords cruise early by taking the morning Norled Ferry from Bergen, and you’ll get back in time to take the Fløibanen (funicular) up Mount Fløye. There are plenty of snacks for the kids along the way and every member of the family will enjoy the views. Our kids were especially excited to have a face to face encounter with a friendly mountain goat and afternoon play on the zip line and playground. The island exploration, combined with a mountain hike, make for the perfect family day out.

Norled provides family-friendly boat tours to Skjerjehamn from Bergen. Enjoy exploring the Fjords and soaking in the Scandinavian views without having to trek everywhere with kids. The boats are fast, smooth and navigate jaw-dropping narrow channels. The morning sun and fog make for an especially picturesque backdrop. There are plenty of snacks for the kids along the way and every member of the family will enjoy the views. The boats run twice a day (8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.). For a jump start on the day, and a chance to avoid the late afternoon witching hours with small kids, opt for the morning ride. Once you get to Skjerjehamn, kids have a chance to explore and refuel with delicious waffles and skillingboller (cinnamon rolls). Our kids particularly enjoyed exploring the docks at Skjerjehamn and found some baby jellyfish below.
DIRECTIONS In the center of Bergen, directly behind the Fish Market to the left when looking at the bay.
TIP Once you get to Skjerjehamn there’s complimentary coffee for the parents!

Take the Fløibanen (funicular) up to the top of Mount Fløyen and enjoy Bergen from a bird’s-eye view. There are two expansive kids playgrounds and easy, family-friendly hikes around an idyllic lake. If you are lucky you might be greeted by a friendly mountain goat along the way.
DIRECTIONS Walk around the bay through the fish market and up a slight incline on Vetrlidsallmenningen to the funicular (21, 5014 Bergen, Norway).
TIP There are no rails prior to entering onto the funicular, so hold onto the kids. The funicular itself is very safe, convenient and offers great views so definitely worth it.
