Prepare in advance
Pack extra clothing in case your kids decide to splash in the water by the Itsukushima Shrine.
Good to know
The town of Miyajima is a small and walkable. We brought a single stroller and a backpack for the day. However, you can’t take strollers with you on the gondola.
Recommended day/time
At low tide you can walk out to the torii gates at Itsukushima Shrine. If possible, try to time your visit accordingly.
About This Day
Miyajima Island offers the perfect day trip when visiting Hiroshima with kids. A short ferry to Miyajima your family gets to experience iconic beaches and stunning views. Once you arrive, take the Miyajima Ropeway up Mount Misen. From there it’s a short hike to the summit, which provides glorious views of the bay below. After your ride back into town, head to the beach to see the torii gate set in the sea. The Itsukushima Shrine is an iconic site of Japan and your kids will love splashing in the shallow water for the rest of the day.

The Miyajima Ropeway has two gondola systems. The Momijidani Line is an aerial lift. The Shishiiwa Line is a tramway, taking passengers up to the summit of Mount Misen, which boasts beautiful views of Miyajima. From the gondola station, it’s a short 3k (almost 2-mi) hike to the peak of the mountain. We tried to walk it with our 3-year-old but 10 minutes into it she complained. My husband and I decided that she and I would hang back in the air-conditioned rest area while he hiked with our 1-year old to the peak. About 45 minutes later, they returned having reached the summit. She had slept most of the journey. We headed back down the ropeway as a reunited family of 4.
DIRECTIONS
There’s a regular ferry from the mainland to Miyajima Island. Make sure you have your camera handy to snap some photos of the approaching island.
TIP
A head for heights is needed for the Ropeway. Bring snacks. And lots of drinks. Strollers must be left at the bottom of the ropeway.

The famous torii gate, set in the sea, is an iconic sight in of Japan. It was approaching low tide around the floating Itsukushima Shrine, so we headed out to take a look. It was, by far, one of the girls’ favorite parts of the day. They enjoyed splashing in the water. So much so, we had to strip them down and change them into dry clothes before we headed back onto the ferry.
DIRECTIONS
From the bottom of the ropeway, you can walk to the shrine.
TIP
There are many deer that roam the island. You are warned not get too close with food as they will take it right from your hands.
